Mother of LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger given the week off by Georgia coach Mark Richt
Oh those pesky conflicts of interest.
Tammy Mettenberger, the mother of LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger is an administrative assistant for Georgia coach Mark Richt. Georgia plays LSU on Saturday, so Richt has given Tammy Mettenberger the week off.
From the Ledger-Enquirer:
“She loves her son, obviously, and it would be awkward for her to be hanging around all week,” Richt said Sunday night. “I told her, ‘Enjoy it, go have fun, do some things you wouldn’t normally do this time of year and enjoy it.’ ”Zach Mettenberger originally enrolled at Georgia, but was dismissed from the team in April of 2010 after a violation of team rules. That March he was arrested outside a bar near Valdosta, Georgia.
He since transferred to LSU, where he's emerged in his senior season as not only an intriguing pro prospect, but as a quarterback near the same level as Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, Alabama's AJ McCarron and Georgia's Aaron Murray, who had originally beaten out Mettenberger while they were both with the Bulldogs.
This season, Mettenberger is 59-91 for 1,026 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception.
It's the first time that Tammy Mettenberger has had to worry about her son playing against her employer. LSU is in the SEC's West Division and Georgia is in the East, so the two teams play each other every six years in the regular season. The two teams met in the SEC Championship in 2011, but Mettenberger was on the bench that season after transferring from a junior college.
In July, Zach said that he expected a not-so-warm reception from the Bulldog faithful on Saturday. Except, presumably, his mother and family.
