Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Clark Gregg Likes Rumors That Agent Coulson Is ‘The Vision’

Fall television is about to get a whole lot more “super” tonight when Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuts on ABC at 8/7 C. The Joss Whedon series is a spin-off of Marvel’s Avengers movies and sees fan favorite Clark Gregg return to the role of Agent Coulson. The only problem that fans have with Agent Coulson’s return? He’s supposed to have died in The Avengers.
So can Clark Gregg explain to us what happened to Agent Coulson? We spoke to him recently and he said, “I know more than you know, but I don’t know that much.” As it turns out, though, he seems to know a lot more than us and sheds some light on whether we might be hearing from Thanos, Hydra or that cellist in Portland this season…

First thing’s first. How exactly does an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. come back from the dead?
“There’s a story there. In fact, there’s a couple of them,” Gregg answered. “There’s the one that he believes and it quickly becomes clear that there’s a lot more to the story than he’s aware of and that becomes a real part of season one.”
Marvel’s fans are excited to find out if their theories about Coulson’s resurrection are true or not, and Gregg’s enjoyed hearing one of their theories in particular.
“People were really convinced — and some remain convinced — that at some point we’ll see Phil Coulson back as the Vision — the kind of artificial intelligent superhero from The Avengers.”
So is Coulson the Vision? Was it a life model decoy? Is he a clone? An alien? A twin brother? What could it be?
Gregg said, “I have a feeling that Joss and these writers will find something that no one has even considered yet. ”
However, there are other mysteries about Coulson that were teased in The Avengers that have yet to be revealed. For instance, will we meet the elusive cellist in Portland that Agent Coulson is so keen on? “God, I hope so!” Gregg said. “I think it’s unavoidable.”
Admittedly, Gregg was only in the middle of filming episode five when he spoke to us, but he already had some idea about whether or not the series would have a big bad or a “monster of the week.”
“From what I can tell in the five episodes we’ve shot, it seems like the answer to that will be ‘all of the above.’ There certainly will be some episodes that have to do with some nefarious character connected to the Marvel Universe showing up, either trying to obtain some post-Avengers technology or superpowers or showing up with some of their own from one of the universes that’s unleashed on the world from The Avengers.
Gregg also shared that he wouldn’t be surprised if some of Hydra’s forces showed up, but on a personal fan-boy level, he would love to interact with the heroes and villains of Guardians of the Galaxy. “I was a fan of some of those comics. It seems like a stretch, but I hope after that [movie], some of Thanos’ cronies show up.”
