Old outdoor hobbies die hard, but new ones are good for you says designer Lee Jakobs
Lee Jakobs is a designer by trade. He’s spent the better part of two decades working on a variety of projects in and around the Bay Area. But without a doubt, the design he’s most proud of is the lifestyle he’s honed and refined over that period. For Jakobs, nothing is as rewarding as playing outside, and whether he’s surfing, biking, or hiking, immersing himself in the Bay Area’s bounty of natural beauty is a top priority.
Fortunately, living near San Francisco means he has a lot of options. He can ride his road bike through the hustle and bustle of the city streets, or quickly escape to the solitude of coastal forest. If the wind at Ocean Beach turns onshore and blows out the waves, he can grab his sail and head out for a speed run on The Bay.
Lee’s love of surfing and design was spawned in Laguna Beach, California. Both only grew as he migrated north, first to San Luis Obispo, where he went to college, and then to his Bay Area home. “The toughest part was adapting to real seasons,” says Jakobs. “Especially summer, which is pretty cruel up here.”
Even Mark Twain agreed, when he quipped. “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”
For Jakobs, who grew up a surfer, that meant trying new things to keep his soul satisfied through the tough months. “That’s when I decided I’d try anything at least once … and more than a few of them stuck.”
And Jakobs’ forays into cycling, mountain biking, and wind surfing inevitably led to work projects. And while he still misses hanging on the beach in the summer, the life he’s designed fits like a glove.
